Pediatric Acupuncture: What to know

Acupuncture for children ages 5–15 can be a safe and effective treatment for a variety of conditions when performed by a licensed and experienced practitioner trained in pediatric care. Fortunately we’ve got your young ones covered!

Pediatric acupuncture adapts traditional techniques to suit the needs and sensitivities of younger patients, often using gentler & shorter needles or non-insertive methods such as magnet therapy, acupressure, and pediatric tuina pediatric massage.

When considering Pediatric Acupuncture for your child we encourage that your family and child consider the follwoing:

Key Points About Pediatric Acupuncture (Ages 5–15):

Safety and Comfort

  • Pediatric acupuncture is generally considered safe when administered by qualified professionals.

  • For younger or needle-sensitive children, non-insertive techniques are applied. Including magnet and ear seed therapies, along with gentle tuina pediatric massage.

  • For children under 5 years of age, Shonishin-a Japanese technique of using a small tool to stimuate the acupressure point is applied. (Please Note that we do not offer shonishin in our office and refer out for children under the age of 5 years.)

  • Treatments are typically shorter in duration than those for adults.

Conditions Commonly Treated

Acupuncture is used to support a range of pediatric health concerns, including:

  • Digestive issues (constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea)

  • Respiratory problems (asthma, allergies, sinusitis, colds)

  • Behavioral and emotional issues (anxiety, ADHD, sleep disturbances)

  • Pain and musculoskeletal issues (headaches, growing pains, sports injuries)

  • Immune support and general wellness

Benefits

  • May reduce reliance on medications (especially for chronic conditions)

  • Supports self-regulation of the nervous system

  • Encourages improved sleep, digestion, and emotional balance

  • Provides a holistic and preventative approach to health

Approach by Age

  • 5–7 years: Often we start children with acupressure, tuina (pediatric massage); needles may be introduced gradually depending on the child’s comfort.

  • 8–12 years: These kiddos are generally more responsive to traditional acupuncture, especially if they’ve been prepared and feel safe with the practitioner. However, we always begin with where the child feels comfortable. Non-insertive techniques are usually blended into treatments for children who feel unsure about needles in certain parts of their body (such as arms, ears, or face).

  • 13–15 years: Teenagers are often able to tolerate and benefit from treatments very similar to adults. But again, each treatment is taylored to the comfort of the person recieving the treatment.

Parental Role

  • Parents are usually encouraged to stay in the room for support. While a parent may be present while the child sits with the treatment, we suggest that screens no be used and the treatment room have a calming low light to promote relaxation of the nervous system.

  • Education is provided to help families understand how acupuncture works and how lifestyle and diet impact healing.

⚠️ Cautions

  • Always seek care from a licensed acupuncturist with experience treating children.

  • Treatments should be individualized based on age, temperament, and condition.

  • Consent and comfort are critical—children should never be forced into treatments.

Acupuncture isn’t just for adults—children ages 5 to 15 can also benefit from this gentle, holistic therapy. Pediatric acupuncture supports growing bodies and minds by addressing issues like anxiety, digestive discomfort, sleep troubles, and sports injuries in a safe and non-invasive way. Treatments are adapted to each child’s age and comfort level, often using gentle techniques like acupressure or non-insertive tools. It’s a natural way to help kids feel balanced, calm, and well-supported as they grow.
