Practitioner Spotlight: Micheline Coley Studies in Taiwan

10 Days in Taiwan: Bringing advanced hospital

clinical pearls back to your care!

Inside my intensive postdoctoral TCM Externship at China Medical University Hospital.

Dr Micheline is committed to continually refining her skills to provide you with exceptional holistic care. Recently she visited Taichung, Taiwan and recieved a unique perspective of how eastern and western medicine are used together. Here are some thoughts from her most recent milestone in her journey as a practitioenr of TCM and Acupuncture.

I recently returned from a comprehensive, 10-day post-doctoral Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) study program at the world-renowned China Medical University Hospital in Taichung, Taiwan.

As an alumnus of the New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Won Institute of Graduate Studies, I traveled across the globe to immerse myself in a healthcare system where advanced modern medicine and time-tested natural therapies coexist. This opportunity, combined with my previous trips to China and Korea, served as an academic exploration to deepen my understanding of Asian cultures and TCM, expand my skill set, and incorporate a historical perspective into my approach to acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Clinical Pearls & Postcards from the Journey:

  • During my hospital rotation, I observed leading physicians use advanced acupuncture and integrative therapies for complex conditions like chronic pain in musculoskeletal diseases, poststroke recovery, and neurological issues.

  • I witnessed modern technology and traditional approaches blend, using digital Tongue and Pulse imaging for precise patient care data.

  • Food as Medicine: In the lab, we formulated raw herbs into topical therapeutic salves (like Tzu Yun Ointment) and explored practical ways to turn daily meals into powerful medicine using therapeutic spices.

A Nugget of Wisdom for You:

Traveling over 16 hours across massive time zones is the ultimate test for the human body. To combat severe jet lag and sleep issues, I used my medical knowledge: deep hydration, targeted supplements, and therapeutic self-massage with essential oils at specific acupressure points to reset my nervous system and circadian clock. I received a foot bath and an upper-body massage, with complimentary herbal tea and wellness jelly, at Jin Sun Massage Center to relieve my achy legs. I also sought acupuncture while visiting the China University to gain firsthand experience with this medicine.

If you have upcoming summer travel or are struggling with sleep disruptions, your body can recalibrate when given the right support. Bringing the Inspiration Back to You

Highlights of our self-guided exploration included visiting exhibits at the National Museum of Natural Science's Acupuncture Museum, visiting Buddha, Confucius, and Daoist Temples, and taking a high-speed rail trip to Taipei.

Whether exploring the historic herbal pharmacies on Dihua Old Street in Taipei or treating my own travel-induced circulation issues with customized herbal decoctions at the hospital clinic, this trip completely re-energized my passion for this medicine.

I am grateful to bring these global insights, advanced perspectives, and elevated clinical techniques back to our community. I look forward to seeing you soon and tailoring these new insights directly to your wellness goals.

To your radiant health,

Dr. Micheline D. Coley, D.Ac, L.Ac,
